Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA)
Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA) was founded on 24 October 1948; it was originally known as Electrical Material Manufacturers' Association and was composed of over 50 small-sized factories producing heavy electric machinery, motors, switches, plugs and lighting products. Since its original name doesn't cover today's high-tech industry, it was renamed Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association in 1994.
The range of products manufactured by TEEMA members includes 16 categories of computers and peripherical equipments, communication products, semiconductors, photoelectric products, heavy electric machinery, AC systems, household electric appliances, measurement instruments and equipments, finished electronic products, power supply equipments, lighting products, wiring equipments, electric parts and components, batteries, information application software and network industry.
Development of Electric and Electronic Industry in Taiwan
In its early stage, there was electric machinery and electrical material manufacturers in Taiwan. Therefore, when TEEMA was founded in 1948, its over 50 member manufacturers are all small-sized factories producing heavy electric machinery, motors, switches, plugs, and lighting products. In 1964, the first foreign factory was established in Taiwan. Since then, along with the continuous industrial growth, there have been more than 100 manufacturers and their products range also expanded greatly. Since 1971, the focus of development shifted to household appliances, lighting products and wiring equipments. It was during this period of time that information industry emerged and capital-intensive and technology-intensive products were developed. The number of TEEMA members has increased to 400. After 1981 and during the stage of developing strategic industries, the manufacturers actively promote new products and emphasized innovation. After 1991, in order to comply with the new trend of internationalized and free trade, Taiwan electric and electronic industry laid stress on investing in foreign markets, creating local brands, marketing in global scope, promoting strategic alliance for joint product development, and manufacturing precision and key electronic parts and components. The number of TEEMA member manufacturers increased to more than 4,200, who invested in over 6,000 projects in mainland China.
General Information of Taiwan Electric and Electronic Industry
In 2002, the total export value of upstream and downstream electric and electronic industry in Taiwan was over USD 65.2 billion, accounting for 49.9% of its gross export value. Its total import value was USD 41.1 billion, accounting for 36.5% of the gross import value in Taiwan. The gross output value of computer information and peripherical equipments was USD 48 billion (including overseas output value), making Taiwan the third largest information products base in the world after the US and Japan. Among its main products, 16 ranking the first in the world include notebook comp uters, monitors, main boards, power supply units, machine cases, scanners, graphic cards, keyboards, uninterrupted power systems (UPS) , mouse, audio cards, video cards, concentrators, MODEM, network cards, and CD. The annual output value of semiconductor industry ranked the 4 th in the world after the US, Japan and Korea, while that of d edicated foundry was the first in the world.
3C Integration Speeds up the Growth of Taiwan Information Appliance Industry
Taiwan household appliance industry is in critical moment of transformation. The rapid development of home computer, low price computer, network computer, personal digital processor, e-business, and wide-band network accelerates the integration of 3C industry (computer, consumption electronic products and communication products) and creates an opportunity for the transformation of household appliance, information and communication industry. Since LCD large screen televisions and PLASMA televisions can be transformed into interactive information receiving stations through communication connection, information appliance (IA) manufacturers accordingly grasp a long-term market competitive superiority and have chance to create a second prosperous period of time in future.
